Your Company: A growing environmental consultancy is seeking an experienced Senior Ecologist to join its Head Office team based in Southampton. The organisation plays a key role in managing ecological surveys, environmental assessments, and biodiversity strategies across multiple sites. The Senior Ecologist will be an integral part of the team, helping to lead projects, support colleagues, and ensure high professional and technical standards are consistently maintained. Your Role and Responsibilities: While in this position your duties may include, but are not limited to : Lead and oversee ecological surveys, site assessments, and monitoring programmes across a range of development and environmental projects. Manage and deliver Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) strategies, ensuring they are effectively integrated into project planning and design. Provide senior-level ecological expertise for Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), habitat creation initiatives, and habitat management plans. Operate under multiple Natural England protected species licences and apply them appropriately during survey and project work. Take responsibility for project delivery from initial scoping through to implementation and long-term monitoring. Support the preparation of technical reports, ecological impact assessments, and project documentation in line with regulatory and professional standards. Mentor and support junior ecologists and consultant colleagues, encouraging professional development and knowledge sharing within the team. Collaborate with clients, project managers, planners, and stakeholders to deliver practical and sustainable ecological solutions. Undertake regular travel to project sites across the region and wider UK, often covering significant distances as part of project delivery. Complete mandatory training and professional development activities to ensure compliance with industry standards and environmental regulations. Maintain accurate records of ecological data, surveys, and project documentation. Contribute to the continuous improvement of internal processes and ecological practices within the organisation. Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure projects are delivered efficiently, professionally, and to a high technical standard. What You Will Need to Apply: Extensive experience working within ecology, environmental science, or a related environmental discipline. Strong technical knowledge of ecological surveys, habitat assessments, biodiversity monitoring, and Biodiversity Net Gain delivery. Experience contributing to Environmental Impact Assessments and ecological management plans. Possession of Natural England protected species licences or the ability to operate under existing licences within project delivery. Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle to support regular travel to project sites. Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively. Analytical mindset with the ability to assess ecological data and produce high-quality technical reports. Excellent communication skills with the ability to liaise with clients, stakeholders, and colleagues at all levels. Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team. Pragmatic and adaptable approach with the ability to balance technical rigour with practical solutions. Passion for ecology, biodiversity enhancement, and sustainable environmental design. Experience mentoring or supporting junior colleagues within a professional environment.
