Job summary

We are looking for a  Gas & Plumbing Supervisor to lead gas engineers, plumbers and specialist subcontractors delivering repairs, servicing and maintenance across our housing stock. The role is hands-on and supervisory, ensuring homes are kept safe, warm and compliant, while maintaining high standards of workmanship and customer service.  Key Details: Location: The Civic Offices, Bridge Street, Reading, RG1 2LU (fully officed based) Contract: ASAP start – contract ends 30/06/2026 Rate: £33 per hour PAYE | £35 per hour Umbrella Main purpose of the role: Responsibilities include supervising operatives on site, conducting toolbox talks and 1:1s, checking van stock and equipment, and providing technical guidance and support to ensure work is completed right first time and within agreed timescales. You must be a qualified Gas & Plumbing professional with up-to-date domestic gas certifications including CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1 and CPA1, supported by a recognised apprenticeship or City & Guilds qualification. Strong technical knowledge, leadership capability, and the ability to assess performance and drive compliance are essential. Good communication skills, IT confidence, and experience managing operatives and subcontractors in a responsive repairs environment are key to success in this role. Key responsibilities:    To carry out regular meetings with staff including skills assessments, tool box talks, one to ones, van stock checks.   To supervise the effective use of resources – staff, materials and transport. Ensuring that the right tradesmen are in the right place using the correct materials.  To monitor the effectiveness of how the work is delivered and make recommendations to the Manager on what improvements could be made to improve the efficiency of the services provided.  To monitor the productivity and quality of work of individual staff and address training needs and development where necessary.  To supervise all work on site and ensure it is carried out effectively as per instructions, in an efficient and cost effective way.  To ensure all work is carried out to a high standard and in accordance with health and safety and repairs legislation, regulations and codes of practice.  To be responsible for ensuring that all Health and Safety policies are adhered to and all employees are adequately trained.  To provide on the job training and induction for new staff.  Qualifications/Education/Training: A good general standard of education, competent literacy and numeracy and basic computer knowledge.    Must have served a recognised apprenticeship or have City & Guilds qualification or equivalent.     SMSTS or IOSH accreditation preferred but not essential.  Skills, Abilities & Competencies: Ability to assess the work of others, give constructive and accurate feedback, set and monitor performance targets.  Ability to deal with demanding or abusive customers using tact and diplomacy  Ability to deal with all aspects of Health and Safety especially CDM.  Must have a detailed knowledge of all relevant building construction legislation and regulations.  Specific Working Requirements: Hold a current driving licence and have access to transport.
